From 18th–21st July 2025, the IEF hosted its Global Egg School in southern Africa — a collaborative, knowledge-sharing initiative delivered in partnership with Lohmann Breeders at Ebenezer Agricultural College, Mozambique.
The programme brought together agricultural students from Ebenezer, and the team from New Horizons Farm for an intensive three-day technical training designed to strengthen practical knowledge, enhance productivity, and support long-term food security across the region.
Building Capacity for Sustainable Egg Production
The Global Egg School aims to equip both current and future generations of poultry producers with the expertise needed to develop efficient, sustainable, and resilient egg production systems. By sharing practical knowledge in poultry management, nutrition, and biosecurity, participants are empowered to apply these skills within their own farms and communities — supporting local enterprise and improved nutrition outcomes.
Delivered by Farhad Mozafar and Dr Amr Saad Saad of Lohmann Breeders, the training combined classroom-based sessions with practical demonstrations and hands-on learning opportunities.
Programme Overview
Day 1: Basics of Successful Egg Production
Participants were introduced to the fundamentals of poultry management, housing systems, biosecurity, and flock health — setting the foundation for productive and healthy layer operations.
Day 2: Essential Elements for Commercial Success
Sessions focused on rearing practices, animal health, and sustainable management approaches for efficient and profitable egg production. Practical examples and case studies illustrated how these principles can be applied at different scales of operation.
Day 3: Hands-On Necropsy Demonstration
A practical workshop led by the Lohmann team offered participants in-depth insights into poultry health diagnostics and disease management. The session helped strengthen participants’ ability to identify, understand, and prevent common challenges in flock health.
Inspiring Local Talent
Throughout the training, participants demonstrated enthusiasm, commitment, and a strong desire to apply what they learned to real-world settings.
Participant Sérgio Teia reflected on the value of the experience, stating that the knowledge gained has strengthened his technical capacity and his commitment to sustainable poultry solutions that support both food security and agribusiness development in Mozambique.
